Verbroncy Plains
The golden grass and sage brush carpeting the Verbroncy Plains produces a picturesque scene. On a blustery day the floor of the plain seems to sway as if the tall grass had become waves in the ocean. The constant rustle of the grass has a hypnotic effect on a traveler even on the calmest day.
Various wildlife makes its home amid the grass and shrubs of the plain. The most common creatures encountered are rabbits, prairie chickens, and field mice. Other larger animals such as buffalo, antelope, wild cattle, and boars are not uncommon. Predators are rare, but usually dangerous when encountered. The most common predators dwelling on the plain are the great prairie cat (lion), wolves, and birds of prey.
By far the greatest danger to be encountered on the plains is the prairie fire. When a prairie fire occurs a traveler caught in its path can do little but run and hope to reach the safety of a river before the fire overtakes him.
Numerous ranching villages and military outposts dot the plains. Farming is also a principle occupation of plains dwellers.
