Apostate
Description: The Apostate formerly served the faithful of a deity opposed to the one she now serves. (For example, a former Chaotic Evil priest who now serves a Lawful Good deity.) Her former Church superiors have branded her a heretic and consider her a dangerous enemy of the faith. For her own reasons, the Apostate now follows a new path and has received the acceptance and blessing of her new deity. She scorns her old faith and its ways.
Barred: None. However, druids rarely become members of this kit.
Role: Wherever she goes, the Apostate espouses the ways of her new faith and preaches against the ways of her former religion. She despises all that she was and strives to be more than she is. Often the Apostate’s scorn of her old faith goes beyond the philosophical and she has vowed to use her priestly powers to destroy her former religion. She uses all resources at her disposal to accomplish her goal of spreading her new religion at the expense of the old.
Weapon Skills: The Apostate may use any weapon normally available to a priest of her class, however, she will never use a weapon specifically associated with her former faith.
Nonweapon Skills: Bonus: Oratory, Reading/Writing, Religion. Recommended: Ancient History, Ancient Languages, Assimilation, Danger Sense, Diplomacy, Disguise, Fire-building, Heraldry, Hierarch Contact, Local History, Mental Resistance, Omen Reading, Sabotage, Spellcraft.
Equipment: Standard, but the Apostate will not wear armor or attire specifically associated with her former religion.
Special benefits
Attack Bonus: The Apostate’s hatred of her former faith fills her with divine strength. When attacking followers of her former faith she receives a +1 bonus to hit and damage. This bonus increases to +2 to hit and damage when attacking priests of that faith or its paladins, champions or other holy warriors.
Secret Knowledge: The Apostate has turned away from her old religion but not forgotten its ways. She knows many of the secrets normally reserved to the elect of her former (usually evil) religion and knows the names of its hierarchs and champions. Specific information about her old religion may be revealed at the DM’s discretion if the Apostate makes a successful Religion skill check.
The Apostate, can if necessary, attempt to disguise herself as a member of her former faith if the ultimate end to the subterfuge will cause harm to her former Church. (Note, the disguise will only hide her true faith not her identity).
Church Protection: The Apostate’s new Church views her as a prize to be flaunted in the face of her old religion. Her new Church will go to extraordinary lengths to ensure their prize continues to cast its shadow across the face of the enemy, offering the Apostate shelter, healing and general aid when needed (at the DM’s discretion).
Special hindrances
Heretic: As a heretic of her former religion, the Apostate is a hunted woman. Any member of the old faith that recognizes her will attempt to capture her or kill her as the situation dictates. In most cases, the former Church does not limit its search for the Apostate to chance encounter, but has commissioned bounty hunters and Church champions to apprehend her. Encounters with representatives of her former Church should be liberally placed by the DM based on the means and assiduity of her former religion.
Mistrust: While her new Church does view the Apostate as a prize, many within in its ranks have misgivings about the sincerity of her conversion. Roughly half of the priests and faithful of her new faith will never consider her a full-fledged member of the religion (at the DM’s discretion). Among the priests and faithful who mistrust her, she receives a -2 reaction penalty.
Baneful Legacy: The Apostate’s denial of her former religion has not gone unnoticed by her deity. She bears some mark or minor curse from her former deity to remind her of the vows she once took and now scorns. Typical curses might include one of the following a -1 penalty to saves against magic casts by priest of her former faith, a slight limp (reducing movement by one, a scar that mysteriously appears across her face, an allergy to a favorite food. In game terms the minor curse should not result in more than a penalty of -1 to a saving throw or ability score. Curses may be picked by the player, but must be approved by the DM.
Wealth options: Standard.
