Using the old style of memorization originally detailed in the
Player's Handbook, a wizard must memorize the arcane formula for a spell before
he can actually cast it. This locks an energy pattern for that
particular spell into his mind. Under this system all spells are
considered fixed magicks.
Once a spell is memorized, it remains in the wizard's memory until
he uses the exact combination of gestures, words, and materials
that triggers the release of this energy pattern. Upon casting,
the energy of the spell is spent, wiped clean from the wizard's
mind until he memorizes it again by studying his spellbooks. Note,
however, the wizard may "memorize" the same spell twice.
The wizard is only able to retain memory of a set number of spells
of each level. Under this system, he may never cast a spell of
a higher level than he is normally able to cast as listed on Table
4.3.4 below. Furthermore, the rules for increasing and reducing
spell effects do not apply under this system. Likewise, the wizard
using this system receives no benefit from bonus spell points
for high Intelligence.
